I learned nothing. These descriptions are basically a rambling list of well-known places with little or no detail. The "meat" of the book, descriptions of the unique, scenic, and truly romantic destinations, are limited to one very small section at the beginning of each region.
Nearly the entire book contains ordinary hotel and restaurant descriptions. But most of all, that's just not what I expected from this book. This book is no more than a glorified advertising supplement.
With rare exceptions, I would never consider hotels and restaurants the most romantic places, nor do I ever plan any vacation around them. The entire book, to the extent it follows the title, could have been condensed down to a fifteen page pamphlet. That is not what I expected or wanted, because such descriptions are easily found on the internet, and will surely be more current and informative.
Also, such recommendations are highly subjective--even with my limited knowledge of the area, I disagreed with several choices and thought of several that were left out.
I definitely recommend it. The book does a good job of helping the reader envision the environment at each place that is reviewed, with lots of details (like the decor in various rooms, specific menu items, etc). This is a very helpful guide. We have selected B&B's using this book many times, and have never been disappointed.
It's rare that we go anywhere without it, and if we do, it's because where we're going isn't in the book, or we just plain forgot the darn book. We have yet to be let down by this guide, and we use it very often. It has plenty of great restaurants and great places to stay.
